If you hate having to turn on a modem every time you use another computer on your wireless network, get ready to be happy. There is a way to resolve this problem, and it's called a wireless router.A wireless router is a small, low-power computer that does nothing but provide Internet access to your wireless network. When you use a wireless router, any computer on your network can be connected to the Internet at any time, regardless of whatever other computers are turned on. This is possible because a wireless router does only one thing, but it does it very well. The router does not even need to be configured before its initial operation in most cases.When you go looking for a wireless router, there are several things to consider. As with any other wireless equipment, you must think about the router's range, speed, and standards. Speed is the top issue for a router, since it may have to provide Internet access to more than one computer at a time. This means that it has to be fast enough to handle this. As far as standards and range go, it is probably silly to buy capabilities beyond what your current wireless set-up has. You won't get any improvements by obtaining a more sophisticated router.We should note that the Linksys WRT54G router is the most popular router currently available. It is also the easiest router to use. It is more expensive than some other routers, however, so you should always shop around to find the best deal. Also, you should make it a point to read reviews about any product you're considering.Installing your wireless router is easy, since most work right out of the box. You should just have to plug it in to the power supply and connect your modem. In most cases, that's all you need to do to begin accessing the Internet wirelessly. In some cases, you might have to perform a few other tasks. The most common issue involves an ISP that uses special software to authenticate your identity before you can get on the Internet. This Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet, or PPPoE, basically allows you to have broadband access while still requiring that you to input a username and password first. Most wireless routers support PPPoE, but you will have to get into the manual and perform some adjustments. You may also need to download an update for the firmware, or on-board software, from the router manufacturer's website.Some of the problems that may arise when using a wireless router involve programs that require a direct connection to the Internet to perform some functions. Programs that require this opening of ports have become relatively rare, but you may have to make this adjustment at some point. In the United States, Bluetooth gets absolutely no respect. It is however, becoming more and more common in notebooks, PDAs, and especially cell phones. Bluetooth will provide wireless users a way to transmit small amounts of data over short distances. I use a Bluetooth headset from Jabra for my Treo 700.Now, Bluetooth is facing stiff competition from new wireless technology. Referred to as UWB or Ultra Wideband, it promises data transfer of up to 480 MB a second - while most current Bluetooth devices transfer data up to 721 KB a second.For the time being, Bluetooth devices are surely cropping up. Below, we will look at some of the accessories offered with Bluetooth technology.Talking to the dashboardWhen pairing it with a cell phone, the CCM Blue Warrior car kit becomes a great speaker phone that plugs into the power adapter of your vehicle. The noise cancelling microphone will reduce background noise efficiently, with the large buttons making adjusting the speaker volume a snap. Although the Blue Warrior is far from sexy or sleek, it's very practical.Tiny tuning boxPart MP3 player and part hands free phone, the compact and lightweight Sony HBM-30 is an attractive gadget that lets you accept calls with minimal interruption of your tunes. When you get an incoming call it will automatically pause your music, then you speak into the built in microphone that you can wear around your neck or clip to your clothes.The penWith Nokia's SU-1B digital pen, you can doodle and make hand written notes in ink on a special pad then transmit them from the pad to your Bluetooth phone. If you have a newer phone that takes high resolution photos, you won't be able to use the Nokia SU-2Image viewer. Keep in mind, the 640 by 480 pixel photos will appear blocky on TV screens, no matter what you do. If your phone can send batches of photos, you can create a slide show - although Nokia claims you can use sequentially beamed shots as well.Even though UWB is on the rise, Bluetooth technology will remain a force in the market for years to come.

Making the BSNL DataOne Wireless Home Network Guide

So, Here is my Step-By-Step guide to configuring a Wi-Fi network with BSNL DataOne. Though many wireless routers claim that it is a no-brainer setup to configure the wireless network, I found it to be not as easy as it looks to be. For example, NetGear comes with a wizard that never works with BSNL broadband connected via HUAWEI SmartAX 880. For those of you desperate to take your BSNL DataOne broadband wireless, follow these steps. It took me more than 2 days to figure and come out with these configuration details.Before I start, let me share what I have:1)BSNL DataOne 256Kbps connection.2)HUAWEI SmartAX MT880 (The modem supplied by BSNL).3) (configuring netgear dg632 for BSNL)NetGear WGR614v5There are 2 steps to configuring your wireless network. First, you have to change the default settings of the SmartAX MT880 modem and configure it to enable PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet). Second, you have to configure the NetGear Router to talk to the modem.Keep your modem, wireless router and your username and password from BSNL handy before you proceed to the next step.If you want to change your existing configuration, take a backup of your configuration. This guide is to build your network from the ground-up.1)Configuring and testing your Broadband connection·Setup the modem as per the instructions mentioned in the manual. Ensure that the RJ11 (thin) cable from the splitter is connected to the ADSL port and the RJ45 cable connects your machine to the Ethernet port of the modem.·Change the IP properties of your Ethernet card to the following:192.168.1.2255.255.255.0192.168.1.1·Open the browser and type http://192.168.1.1 to go to the HUAWEI configuration tool.·Enter ?admin? as username and ?admin? as password·Expand the Home node and select the WAN Setting·Under this web page, configure the following:PVC Number ? PVC 0Wan Type ? PPPConnection Type ? PPPoEVPI/VCI ? 0 / 35Default Route - EnabledUser Name ? Password ? Use DNS ? EnabledMax Idle Time ? But it is a good idea to follow the 192.168.x.x convention·If you get lost any time, feel free to reset the configuration by poking a pin into the reset slot on the modem and the router.·Don?t compromise on the security. How to Hook Up a TV to a Computer as an Alternate Monitor

My computer right now is hooked up to my 53" TV across the room. It's a pretty cool trick, and if you have a computer and television in the same room you should see if you have a way to hook them up. Doing actual work is best on a real computer monitor (LCD preferred, but CRT acceptable), but watching videos, playing games, and surfing the web are pretty fun things to do from the couch.The resolution of TVs compared to actual computer monitors is pretty bad, unless you have an LCD tv. Mine is not, but even still I find that it is a very cool thing to have hooked up, and it works just fine for watching movies/videos. Games are doable if there isn't a lot of text on-screen that you have to read, but you won't be chatting to your buddies in World of Warcraft if you want to keep from going blind.Word processing / web browsing is tolerable, but can be eye-straining after long periods. Definitely increase the text size as big as you can stand it for reduced eye strain. All in all, I just use my TV for videos because it's much easier to just sit at my desk and use my computer LCD monitor for doing actual work.Most newer video cards have an S-video port on them, and this is the easiest way (and the way I use) to hook your TV up to your computer. Some newer video cards will also have other outputs, and some newer TVs will have VGA or DVI inputs to take a regular monitor cable. Just look at the ports on both devices and you should be able to tell if they have one in common, then you just have to figure out what they are. If they do not have one in common, look on your TV for an S-video port (it's a black circle about the width of your finger), and if you find one, you just need to buy a video card (they can be had for less than $100) that has an S-video out.Once you have them hooked up with a cable (S-video or otherwise), you'll need to go into your driver settings on the PC. In Windows, right-click on the desktop and hit Properties to access the Display Properties window, then go to the Settings tab. On some video cards you can select/enable an alternate monitor (the TV) right from this window, but on most video cards you have to click the Advanced button and configure it there.Most of the good video cards will let you display the screen on both devices (your monitor and your TV) simultaneously, but the geForce card I have right now will only let me use the two displays as side-by-side desktops. This actually works out better for me, because I can have news or whatever playing on the TV, and keep working on my normal desktop. I'm not sure if you've heard or seen it, but Bill Gates uses a triple desktop on his computer (3 LCDs) -- I hope you're as jealous as I am!
